The difference between reduced/avoided emissions and carbon removal

REDUCED/AVOIDED EMISSIONS:

Greenhouse gas emission reductions means the quantified decrease in greenhouse gas emissions related to/arising from an activity between two points in time. In the context of carbon credits, greenhouse gas emission reductions are quantified relative to a valid baseline scenario. Protecting a stock of carbon or other substance whose destruction would generate greenhouse gas emissions is sometimes referred to as emission avoidance.

CARBON REMOVAL:

Carbon dioxide removal (CDR) refers to anthropogenic activities removing CO2 from the atmosphere and permanently storing it in geological, terrestrial, or ocean reservoirs, or in products. It includes existing and potential anthropogenic enhancement of biological or geochemical sinks and direct air capture and storage, but excludes natural CO2 uptake not directly caused by human activities. Greenhouse gas removal refers to anthropogenic activities removing other greenhouse gases than CO2 from the atmosphere.
